How to make cheesy French toast sticks

Firstly, make the cream cheese filling. Add the shredded mozzarella, Cheddar, cream cheese, and spring onions to a bowl. Combine together well with a fork.

Secondly, make the egg mixture. Crack the eggs into a medium-sized bowl. Add the milk and mixed herbs before seasoning with salt and pepper. Whisk together with a fork.

Remove the crusts from the bread. Spread 3 of the slices with the cheese mixture. Top with the remaining slices and slice each sandwich into 3 finger sandwiches.

Heat a little vegetable oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Dip a sandwich in the egg mix and coat well. Place straight into the frying pan. Repeat until the frying pan is full, cooking in batches and flipping the French toast sticks until they are golden all over.

What to serve with savoury French toast

Serve the French toast sticks hot with your favourite sauces, such as ketchup, hot sauce, and mayonnaise. You could also serve savoury French toast with (veggie) sausages, bacon, eggs, or baked beans.

Can French toast be savoury?

As this recipe proves, French toast can be just as delicious made savoury as sweet! If you prefer, you can omit the cheese and simply fry the bread dipped in the egg mix. It will then be delicious served as part of a savoury breakfast!

Savoury French toast ideas

There are many ways to enjoy savoury French toast:

  • Stuff it with your favourite cheese! Switch up the cheese fillings, why not try using Gouda, Gruyère, or Emmental?
  • Add a slice of (vegan) ham or bacon to the filling before frying, this will turn your savoury French toast into more of a substantial meal.
  • Serve your savoury French toast alongside soup, these dippers taste great alongside a big bowl of tomato and basil soup!
  • Serve your toast alongside some herby fried mushrooms or as part of an English breakfast.
