5-Ingredient chocolate peanut butter hearts
These homemade double chocolate peanut butter hearts have just 5 simple ingredients.
- smooth natural peanut butter
- ground almonds
- icing sugar
- vegan butter
- dark chocolate
For the peanut butter I personally prefer to use smooth. If you would like some extra texture feel free to use crunchy if you prefer. I used Pip and Nut smooth peanut butter which is very runny. This made it very easy to combine the ingredients. If your peanut butter is more solid, try microwaving it for a 30 seconds to loosen it up a bit. Using a more solid peanut butter can be beneficial as it will keep your hearts from melting.

I added ground almonds to my chocolate peanut butter mixture as it added extra texture and flavour to the hearts. It also helped to make the mixture more solid.
This recipe is made to be suitable for vegans. I, therefore, decided to use vegan butter in my mixture. I used vegan butter as opposed to vegan margarine as it is more solid and helps prevent the peanut butter mixture from going too soft. If you are not vegan then dairy butter will work fine in this recipe.
I used icing sugar in this recipe to sweeten up the mixture. Natural peanut butter is unsweetened and made of just ground peanuts and, sometimes, salt. I prefer to use natural peanut butter as sweetened peanut butter often has extra ingredients, such as palm oil. I used icing sugar as it does not have the grainy texture which granulated sugar has.
These peanut butter hearts are extra chocolatey as I added dark chocolate into the mixture as well as dipping the hearts into the chocolate. Not all dark chocolate is vegan so if you follow a plant-based diet ensure you are buying chocolate without milk. I think these peanut butter hearts taste better with extra dark chocolate as it balances out the sweet peanut butter flavour. I used 72% dark chocolate.

Ingredients: substitutes and additions
There are a range of ways you can alter this recipe to your preferences. Firstly you can make this recipe into chocolate covered peanut butter hearts. To do this melt an extra 50g of dark chocolate and fully submerge the hearts into the chocolate. To make these hearts sweeter and more like Reese’s peanut butter cups feel free to use milk chocolate instead of dark. If you like things really sweet you could even use white chocolate.
Homemade Reese’s peanut butter cups recipe
You can use this recipe to make double chocolate peanut butter cups similar to Reese’s. To do this use cupcake cases. Cut the frozen peanut butter mixture into circles slightly smaller than the cupcake cases. Fill the cupcake cases with a tablespoon of melted chocolate followed by a circle of peanut butter mixture and topped with another tablespoon of melted chocolate. Freeze until solid. You could also use milk chocolate if you prefer.

Does peanut butter and chocolate go together?
Peanut butter and chocolate are a perfect pairing. Peanut butter is deliciously salty whilst chocolate is sweet. This sweet and salty mixture makes for the perfect snack.
Nutrition
These are not necessarily the healthiest snack, however they do have some benefits. Peanuts are high in healthy unsaturated fats and protein. Dark chocolate, meanwhile, is a great source of antioxidants.
